Household size in Bloomington

Neighborhood average household sizes tend to greatly impact public service delivery and to follow cycles, although those cycles can change from generation to generation. In the 1950s and 1960s, when Bloomington saw the bulk of its population growth, a high percentage of new housing units were purchased by families with young children. Average household sizes were large (a Bloomington average of 4.2 people per household in 1960), placing a large impact on the public school system (Bloomington school enrollment peaked at 25,000 students in the 1960s). Over time, those children moved on and started their own families. The original homeowners often stayed, and now many are single occupant households. Average household sizes have fallen since the 1960s (Bloomington's average household size is now 2.3 people per household). In 2000, there were around 11,000 students in Bloomington public schools.
