Special Event - Global Celebration

Hayor Bibimma Dancers

The opening weekend was terrific.  It was a lot of fun to see so many friendly and familiar faces.  We are very excited about the upcoming Global Celebration taking place this Saturday, June 20th, on the East Lawn of Civic Plaza from 9:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.  There will be Food, Crafts, Games and Entertainment as well as a Cultural Carnival which teaches children about world cultures.  Be sure to check out the Global Celebration link for a list of all the exhibitors and performers.

Strawberries will be available this weekend as well as lettuces (see the recipe below for a quick and easy homemade dressing), spinach, snap peas, onions, potatoes, kohlrabi, radishes, rhubarb and select herbs. The Master Gardeners will be joining us again this weekend from 8:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. at the city tent, be sure to bring your questions and samples as they will not be back until August 15th.  The Bloomington Art Center will also be at the Market creating Multi Cultural Masks from 8:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. or while supplies last.  Be sure to stop by and create a masterpiece of your own!

Please note the map and designated parking areas.  The East Lot of Civic Plaza where the Market is held is Handicap Parking only.  There is plenty of Free Parking on the West Side of Civic Plaza and it is a great way to see what is new inside the building.  There is also parking across the street at Public Works off of James Ave.

Remember our new Market hours are 8:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.; for safety and fairness there is NO shopping before 8:00 A.M.  Also, for environmental health reasons, pets are not allowed in the Market.

If you are interested in volunteering at the Farmers Market we could use your help!  Please contact Jill Murphy 952.563.8889 or Keri Lahl at farmersmarket@ci.bloomington.mn.us for more information.  We can also use your help spreading the word about the Bloomington Market.  If you have a place to hang a sign about the Farmers Market (church, workplace, coffee shop, etc.) you can either print the poster yourself or pick up a copy at the City's information tent.

Meet the Vendor -
Ruhland's Strudel Haus

Ruhlands Strudel

It all started in 2002 when Tom Ruhland was trying to come up with a concession idea for the State Fair, Ruhland's Strudel Haus was the result with thousands of happy customers ever since!  Although Tom does not bring the strudel to the State Fair you will find him at Farmers Markets and special events around town.  Tom is the Chief Strudel Maker and Thinker-Upper, creating all of his own recipes.

Ruhlands offers 25 different varieties including both sweet and savory strudels.  They use the finest ingredients for their delectable strudels and buy from local farmers and producers whenever possible.  Right now they are busy picking spinach from a local farm as well as harvesting rhubarb from a 75 year old plant!  They also use local Harralson apples from the Pepin Heights orchards.  Although they make strudels all year long they love to use the fresh seasonal produce.

One of the challenges Ruhland's faces is keeping up with demand.  Everything is handmade in small batches which produce about 30 strudels.  Tom has 6 deep freezers which house all of the strudels.  They are very excited to bring their strudels to the Bloomington Market and Tom loves to meet his customers face to face.  "It is great to provide a hand made product and be able to share that with your customers".

This weekend Ruhland's Strudel Haus will be set up in two locations. You will be able to taste the fresh warm strudels on the east lawn as part of the Global Celebration.  Also, you will be able to purchase frozen strudels you can make at home at the South East corner of the Farmers Market.  The varieties they will be selling include:  Spinach Feta Artichoke, Chicken Marinara, Brat & Sauerkraut for the savory varieties.  The sweet varieties include:  Apple, Strawberry Rhubarb and Chocolate Banana Walnut.  When asked what his favorite flavor is Tom responded "all of them" his wife adds "there is never a bad choice!"  For more information check out their website  www.thestrudelhaus.com.
