Issue #8 - September 5, 2009 |
September is Here! The calendar may say September, but don't worry, summer produce is still abundant at the Market! My family is having fun making fresh salsa, eating corn on the cob and we can't get enough of the delicious apples. It really is a great time of year when apples and pears are available in addition to all of the summer produce. If you enjoy pickling and canning the upcoming holiday weekend is the perfect time to take advantage of the bountiful produce and savor it all winter long! We hope you are enjoying some of the improvements we have made to the Farmers Market grounds. We added electricity in the parking lot this summer to make it easier, quieter and cleaner for our vendors who need electricity to use an outlet instead of a generator. We have also added some new recyclable aluminum picnic tables and a new fountain for you to enjoy. Sisters' Sludge is now making espresso drinks thanks to the newly added electricity, so grab a latte and a spot at a picnic table and enjoy the view as well as the music! There are still 6 weeks left of the Farmers Market, October 10th will be our last Saturday outdoors this year. We will, however, be moving the Market indoors on Saturdays November 14th and December 5th from 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m., watch for more details coming soon!
Steve West will be back to perform this
Saturday from Meet the Vendor - Tollefson's Family Pork
After raising pigs for the past 30 years the Tollefson's know a thing or two about good quality pork. They are pioneers of the No Antibiotic, No Growth Hormones and No Animal By-Products movement. They have been raising pigs this way for the past 20 years. Their pigs are fed an all vegetarian diet which includes fish oil, soybeans and grains. The result is pork which includes Omega 3's and reduced saturated fat. Not only is this pork good for you, the flavor and quality is outstanding. Tollefson Family Pork is located in New Sweden MN, between Gaylord and St. Peter. Danny and Jenny Tollefson have 5 kids and most of them still help out at the Markets and on the Farm. They have been selling their products at the Minneapolis Farmers Market for 21 years and all of their children have grown up helping at the Market. When Ruck's Meats came under new ownership last year, Tollefson's jumped right in and took over their spot at the Market. We are very pleased to have them participate in our market. Tollefson's still has Ruck's process all of their meats, some of the recipes are the same and some are new.
At Tollefson's Saturday mornings come quickly after working full time all week.
Lucas Tollefson and his crew rise at about 3:30 a.m. to
get everything packed and loaded into the freezers and on the trailer. Once
packed, they head to the Market, fire up the grills and get ready to start selling
sandwiches and frozen items you can take home to grill yourself. Some of their
favorites are Cottage Bacon (perfect for BLT's ) and Smoked Pork Chops. Jenny
Tollefson also loves to cook with the ground pork (great for tacos) and the sweet
Italian pork sausage makes great spaghetti. Hot Dogs are always a customer
favorite and in 2006 Tollefson's was voted "Best Hot Dog" by City Pages. Having a family farm is a tough business, especially as the price of hogs continues to fall. Many people are getting out of the business. Luckily for the Tollefson's and their customers, they have established their business by bringing their products directly to the consumers and selling it at Farmers Markets. They have hands on quality control and the Tollefson's really enjoy meeting their customers and bringing their high quality products to Market. Be sure to check out www.tollefsonfamilypork.com to learn more or place your order online.
You will find Tollefson's Family Pork on the SW corner of the Market, be sure to stop
by for a sample and then pick up something to grill! Apple Bread - submitted by Debbie Lorbiecki from Allrecipes.com
