Get Fit DayWe hope you can join us this Saturday as we promote healthy eating and exercise. Summer is the perfect time to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet and the Farmers Market is the perfect place to find them. Bike to the Market this Saturday and you will receive a $2 coupon to spend at the Farmers Market on Saturday June 26th. There will be a bike valet ready to watch your bike while you shop! Are you looking for a new form of exercise to get fit? Come and join Free Spirit Fitness as they will be offering a free T'ai Chi class at 9 a.m. on the east lawn of Civic Plaza. T'ai Chi will help you reduce stress, elevate your mood, lower blood pressure, increase circulation, improve balance and coordination while also boosting cardiovascular fitness and bolstering your immune system. No equipment needed just comfy street clothes and tennis shoes. Also, stop by the City tent and pick up a free walking map that includes the distance of the different paths around the farmers market and some fun facts about diet and exercise! Remember your T-shirt for the bag making event with Doree Maser! It has been a lot of fun watching Doree transform your favorite T-shirt into a reusable bag. This will be the last day Doree will be making bags. She will be available from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.; we are looking forward to seeing all of the T-shirt bags this summer at the Market.
The Bloomington Chorale will be performing this Saturday from 10 a.m. to
12 p.m.; if you have not seen the Chorale perform you are in for a real musical
treat! Commuter services will also be at the Market this Saturday and will have plenty of information on how you can help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution while easing the commute for people who live and work in the area.
Looking for a specific vendor? You can check out our
vendor list for specific products and the
vendor map for locations. We will be open on Saturday July 3rd
and hope you will join us! Watch for your next newsletter on July 8th. SHIP- State Health Improvement Program
We are very fortunate to be part of the Statewide Health Improvement plan, also known as SHIP. The goal of the SHIP program is to give all Minnesotans the opportunity to live longer, better, healthier lives. SHIP seeks to make healthy living easier where we live, work and play. SHIP is working with the communities of Bloomington, Edina and Richfield to reduce the risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. The program targets the top three preventable causes: physical inactivity, poor nutrition and tobacco use. Stay up to date with SHIP and sign up to receive their eNewsletter. Did you know: Aerobic exercise is one of the best preventative medicines available and one of the cheapest. Between birth and old age, you will walk about 70,000 miles. Walking is one of the best activities you can do to keep your heart-lung complex in good working condition. Consistent exercise teaches your body how to be an efficient fat-burner rather than a fat-storer. If you are 25 pounds overweight, you have nearly 5,000 extra miles of blood vessels through which your heart must pump blood. Eating foods with carotenoids can lower your risk of cancer. Vegetables high in carotenoids are tomatoes, carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes and collard greens. It is recommended that you eat 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day. A serving equals one-half cup.
Information taken from factmonster.com Honey Roasted Beets - Mindy Shulfer, Farmers Market Customer
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F Trim and scrub beets leaving root and 1" stem intact. Place on a sheet of foil, drizzle with 1/2 TB olive oil and wrap loosely but tightly (seal edges). Place on a baking sheet. Bake for 1 hour and let cool enough to handle. Remove stems and roots, peel and slice beets. Place in bowl. Combine glaze ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil for 1 minute. Pour over beets. You can find nearly all of the ingredients for this recipe at the market. Olive oil and balsamic vinegar are available at St. Martins pickle booth, honey is available at Aspen Ridge Honey booth and many vendors have beets.
