Potato Art

Help us celebrate the root vegetable season with potato art!  Bring the kids to the City tent and make a one of a kind masterpiece with potato stamps and paint from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

We will also be collecting market produce for VEAP this weekend.  Please help us stock the food shelves with some great fresh veggies.  You will find donation boxes at the City Information tent.

Just a reminder the outdoor market will run through October 16th and then we will head indoors on November 13th and December 11th from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m..  Watch for a list of participating vendors as the date gets closer.

Michael_Riddle

We have some of our favorite musicians returning to the farmers market over the next two weeks. Steve West will be playing this Saturday and Michael Riddle and Friends (pictured above) will be back on September 25th; both will be playing from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.  Grab some coffee or hot cider and enjoy the great music.  West and Riddle have been entertaining guests at the market since its inception in 2007!

For more great music and entertainment, tickets are now available for the 2010 - 2011 BCA Performance Series.  It includes inspirational pianist Mary Beth Carlson, a Beatles review by Rubber Soul - The Tribute, an excellent bluegrass and gospel quintet, Monroe Crossing, and big band jazz featuring The Wolverines.  Click here to order tickets on-line:  Bloomington Box Office.

Pang Chang Her

pang_chang_her

Just outside of Taylors Falls, Pang Chang Her and his family are busy farming.  You would never guess they have only been selling at farmers markets for four years.  Their beautiful bell peppers, gorgeous green beans and terrific tomatoes are a weekly hit.  They always look and taste delicious!  Pang Cheng Her has a wide variety of produce available but some of their favorites include leafy greens, tomatoes and peppers.  It has been a great growing season for most vegetables but a little too wet for eggplants and tomatoes.

With six acres to tend, it is a good thing Pang Chang has some help from his family and a good tractor.  His four children are very busy attending college and high school but they still find time to help in the fields and work at the Market.  Although the tractor is very helpful, there is still a lot of handwork such as weeding in between the plants.  Three different crops are started throughout the season, starting in the early spring and extending into mid-summer.  For example, tomatoes are planted late April to mid May in hopes of an early crop, while the next planting takes place early June and then again in late June.  "There is always the risk of frost with the first planting" but the chance for early tomatoes is worth the risk states Lue Her.

Although Pang Chang Her enjoys farming in Taylors Falls, it does pose some extra challenges.  For starters, it is a good hour commute from their home.  Not only does this add extra cost for gas, it also makes for late nights getting ready for Market.  In peak season the Hers' are up until 1 or 2 in the morning washing vegetables.  The cost of seeds also seems to get more expensive every year, and half of the crops Pang Chang Her grows are started by seed.

The Her family participates in five different farmers markets around the metro area.  "Bloomington is our favorite as we love the variety at the Market and our customers are well-educated and appreciate the value of freshly grown food".

You will find Pang Chang Her and his family in the center aisle of the Market next to Great Harvest Bread.  Be sure to stop by, you are sure to enjoy their wide variety of produce.
