Noon - 5 p.m.
Normandale Lake Bandshell

Enjoy the smooth sounds of jazz at the annual Bloomington Jazz Festival. This year's festival features three high quality acts that are sure to get your toes tapping! Food vendors will be on site to provide your lunch or dinner.

The lineup this year includes:

  • Rum River Brass Band (12 noon) – This brass quintet is composed of experienced players from the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities. They play an eclectic mix of classical transcriptions, rags, jazz, Dixieland, popular ballads - in short, just about anything. They hope that their influences by groups such as Canadian Brass and Empire Brass shine through their music.
  • Vic Volare and the Volare Lounge Orchestra (1:30 p.m.) – Vic Volare silky smooth vocals and comfortable stage presence will bring the smoky lounge to you. His orchestra is comprised of some of the top individual jazz talent in the Twin Cities and their collaboration completes this swing group.
  • The Wolverines Big Band (3 p.m.) – Formed in 1973, the band started out performing transcriptions of the music of the "hot" orchestras, popular between the World Wars. House gigs in the early years included such Jazz Age nightspots as Scottie's On Seventh, the Commodore, and Castle Royale.

They opened for Sarah Vaughan and Manhattan Transfer, and performed on the initial broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion. Their first four albums received the coveted four star review in Downbeat Magazine. They even played Jimmy Carter's Inaugural Ball.

Now in their 38th year, led by drummer Jendeen Forberg, the Wolverines Big Band continues to perform their matchless repertoire. Covering a wide range of styles, this includes the best of the bands led by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson and more.

No admission will be charged.

All schedules are subject to change. Follow the links or check the June issue of the Briefing or the Arts in the Parks brochure for this year's schedule.
