Community

  • 86th Street has been redesigned to make walking and biking safer and easier.
  • More bike racks have been added throughout the City.
  • Preschool and childcare centers are implementing changes to provide healthier foods and increase physical activity for children. More information here.
  • Promoting the Bloomington Farmers Market and improving access to the market for all residents.

  • More signs will be posted in city parks communicating Bloomington’s tobacco free parks policy.

Schools

  • Working with wellness committees in schools to implement policies and practices for healthy eating and physical activity.
  • Provided resources and training to four elementary schools for increasing physical activity during the school day.
  • Provided resources and training make school meals healthier. Bloomington Public Schools discontinued serving foods with trans fat and added healthier options to their à la carte offerings. Oak Grove Middle and Poplar Bridge Elementary schools will have school garden programs in spring 2011.
  • Partnering with other City departments to improve walkways near five Bloomington Schools – Oak Grove Elementary & Middle, Poplar Bridge, and Valley View Elementary & Middle.
  • Encouraging students and staff to walk and bike to school.

  • Working with healthcare clinics and providers to regularly assist their patients with healthy eating habits, increasing physical activity, and decreasing alcohol and tobacco use.
