Rethinking roundabouts

TH169 / I494 roundabouts

Six new roundabouts will be installed on the new frontage ring road system as part of the TH 169/I-494 project. Three roundabouts (A-C) will be located directly north of I-494 and three roundabouts will be located directly south of I-494 (D-F).

The roundabouts will be a combination of single, double, and multi-lanes (single and double lane within the same roundabout) and will have a maximum travel speed of approximately 25 mph.

Using the roundabout - emergency vehicles

Like other larger vehicles, emergency vehicles are able to navigate successfully through a roundabout with the help of the mountable apron. In addition, roundabouts provide emergency vehicles with the benefits of slower driving speeds that can make it safer to travel through a roundabout rather than a traditional intersection.

You should not enter the roundabout if an emergency vehicle is approaching, but instead wait until the vehicle has passed through the roundabout. If already inside the roundabout when an emergency vehicle approaches, you should exit the circular roadway immediately and pull over. Don't stop inside the roundabout.
