Motor vehicle and driver's license FAQs

What is needed for a new resident to obtain Minnesota title and license plates?

A person has 60 days after becoming a resident (as long as their out of state plates are current) to obtain Minnesota license plates. Items needed to complete the transaction are:

  • Current registration card or title.
  • Proof of Minnesota no-fault insurance.
  • Odometer reading.
  • Lien holder name and address (if vehicle is financed).
  • Driver's license or identification card.

Fees can be paid by cash, check (pre-printed with your name and address located within the seven-county metro area) or money order. An estimate of fees can be obtained by contacting the Motor Vehicle Office.

How can I obtain a duplicate driver's license if mine has been lost or stolen?

Come into the office and fill out an application. A duplicate of the current license will be issued by the state in approximately 7 business days. The cost is $13.50.

How do I renew my Minnesota license plates if I do not have a notice?

You do not need the notice to renew your registration. The vehicle owner can come into the office with the license plate number, current tab (sticker) number, and their driver's license. A registration card can be printed and tabs purchased.
