Blanding's turtles, a state-threatened species, have been spotted near 84th Street and East Bush Lake Road.

Use extra caution while driving

Although improvements to 84th Street and East Bush Lake Road have made the area safer and more turtle-friendly, motorists should still use extra caution during the turtles' nesting season.

Identifying Blanding's turtles

The turtles have distinctive high-domed black shells with yellow flecks and bright yellow throats.

Primarily marsh and pond inhabitants, nesting females and hatchlings are often at risk of being killed while crossing roads between wetlands and nesting areas.

For more information on Blanding's turtles, visit the Blanding's turtle page on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' website. The DNR site has information on other endangered or threatened species as well.
