Dakota Language CampJuly 28 - 30![]() Learn about Dakota language and life ways from local experts. The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation and the Pond Dakota Heritage Society will host a Dakota Language Camp for Native and non-Native children in Kindergarten through 6th grade on July 28 - 30, 2009. The three-day camp will interactively engage youth in Dakota language and life ways learning through local Dakota community cultural experts. Some of the themes will be animal tracking/plant identification, traditional games, drum-making and drumming/singing, and Native crafts. The City of Bloomington has partnered with three Dakota organizations which are working in the Dakota language revitalization movement: the University of Minnesota Dakota Language Department, Dakota Wicohan, and the Wicoie Nandagikendan Urban Immersion Program. The goal of the camp is to encourage the study of the Dakota language, one of the original languages of Minnesota, which is in danger of being "lost" due to the limited number of fluent speakers.
